In disasters of this type, the long-term recovery becomes a significant issue. That is where United Ways of Missouri will be focusing their efforts; supporting programs designed to help with long-term recovery including housing, job creation, health issues and other programs aimed at reestablishing some sense of normalcy in a community that will be faced with rebuilding both structures and lives.
There are many options to support the Joplin tornado relief and recovery effort:
Volunteering
People wishing to volunteer or those with questions are encouraged to call United Way 2-1-1 for additional information. The number to call is 2-1-1 on most phones or you can call (800) 427-4626. Due to the volume of calls to 2-1-1 inquiring about volunteer opportunities for the Joplin area, 2-1-1 Missouri call center has asked that those interested in volunteering, visit their website www.211missouri.org and sign up online.
In four days, 8,000 people have signed up through United Way 2-1-1 to volunteer with Joplin tornado relief efforts. That’s nearly one person every 30 seconds. Thank you. We have been assured you will be needed in the weeks and months ahead and that you will be contacted as help is needed.
Again, disaster officials are discouraging anyone from traveling to Joplin this weekend. The people on the front lines are still in search and recovery mode and additional volunteers would be a hindrance to their recovery efforts. It will take at least another week before general volunteers will be needed to assist with clean-up activities and other projects.
Donating
To support immediate recovery, sheltering and mass care efforts, you can direct your funds to the American Red Cross Joplin Disaster Relief Fund. Your gift enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims. You may also call the local Red Cross Office at (573) 635-1132, mail your donation to American Red Cross, 431 E. McCarty St., Jefferson City, MO 65101, or text “RED CROSS” to 90999 for a $10 donation. Internet users can make a secure on-line donation by visiting www.redcrosscapitalarea.org
If you would like to help through your local United Way, please send your checks to United Way of Central Missouri, 1025 Southwest Blvd. Suite B., Jefferson City, MO 65109, marked JOPLIN TORNADO DISASTER RELIEF and all funds received will be distributed to the United Way of Southwest Missouri (Joplin) with no administrative or overhead fees.
OTHER TIPS
DO wait for a call for volunteers before going to Joplin.
Your safety and the safety of the residents of Joplin are extremely important in a disaster situation. It is safest for everyone right now to allow the first responders to continue their work and allow for clean up in the weeks and months to come.
DO sign up with reputable organization for volunteering.
There are many organizations working right now to create safe and meaningful projects for when the time comes. It’s safer for everyone if you sign up with an organization rather than showing up.
DON’T send unsolicited items.
As requests are made for certain items and supplies, donating to fill these needs is very generous. However, unsolicited items will inundate the town and could potentially harm relief efforts. At this time all non-financial donations should be registered on www.aidmatrix.org/fema.
DO keep helping.
It’s clear that we live in a generous community and a generous nation. We cannot thank you enough for everything that you’re doing to help people in need and for Living United!

United Way Announces 2011 Campaign Co-Chairs and One-time Grants

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E822cbqS0S0/TdVsmgGwCNI/AAAAAAAAALY/hr3vnLXQ-Fc/s320/IMG_1228.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608508319668898002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bwGz1ULodlk/TdVbTc_nDmI/AAAAAAAAALQ/TjPKrJJ3UYg/s320/IMG_1230.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608489300718456418" />
The United Way of Central Missouri announced this year’s campaign leadership and one-time grant recipients at a news conference this morning.

Two longtime Jefferson City area residents and community leaders will serve as this year’s Campaign co-chairs. Ann Littlefield was a National Bank Examiner with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency until retiring 27 years ago to become a full-time mother and community volunteer. She currently serves on the United Way Foundation Board of Directors; Board of The Food Bank for Central and Northwest Missouri and chaired their" Tigers Score Against Hunger" fundraising campaign. She is the lead coordinator for the Food Bank’s “Buddy Pack” program. Ann has served on the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service board, the Capital Arts Board and held many PTA offices throughout her children's school years. She is married to Ken, President of Central Bank and they have three children, Amanda, Lindsay and Brett.

John Kehoe has been an active United Way Board volunteer and a strong supporter of many of our partner agencies. He currently serves as Chair of the United Way Osage County Advisory Board, and like Ann, is involved with Food Bank’s Buddy Pack Program. He has served on the United Way Board of Directors, having held the positions of Vice-chair, Chairman, and Past-Chairman. He has served on various other United Way committees, and has played a critical role in past campaigns as a team leader and mentor to new campaign team members. John generously donates his time and talent throughout the community. John is married to Patty, and they have three married children, Christy, Kate and Dan; and have seven grandchildren.

“It is a privilege and an honor to have these two individuals lead our community campaign this year’, said Ann Bax, President/CPO of United Way of Central Missouri. ‘They will be a tremendous asset to the United Way and our volunteers.”

The United Way of Central Missouri Board of Directors approved $50,970 for one-time grants to seven agencies; American Red Cross,Community Health Center, Rape & Abuse Crisis Service, Salvation Army, Jefferson City Day Care Center, River City Habitat for Humanity, and Job Point. The United Way received twenty grant requests totaling $299,505. The goal of the United Way is to continue to fund additional programs that provide services in our four county service area.

The United Way of Central Missouri’s community campaign is held annually to help fund the work of its 25 partner agencies and programs. The United Way of Central Missouri serves Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage, and southern Callaway counties. Over 100,000 individuals were served by these agencies last year. During the luncheon event, elections were held for the 2011 Governing Body and Board of Directors. Also, businesses and individuals were recognized for their commitment to the United Way in 2010.
Fifty two members of the Governing Body were elected to three-year terms. Three new members of the Board of Directors, Brandy Bryant, Jefferson Bank, Greg Gaffke, CenturyLink, and Brent VanConia, St. Mary’s Health Center were also elected to three-year terms. Five board members, Didier Aur, Helias Catholic High School, Faye Edwards, Scholastic, Gaye Suggett, Ameren Missouri, Ann Whaley, and Warren Krech, Zimmer Radio Group were re-appointed to another three-year term.
The United Way of Central Missouri recognized three outgoing Board members, Mark Towner, Towner Communications, Stan Koenigsfeld, Learfield Communications, and Duane Schreimann, Schreimann, Rackers, Francka & Blunt. Faye Edwards, Scholastic, will serve as the 2011 Board Chairman. Also, the 2010 Campaign Co-chairs, Bernie Fechtel, Fechtel Beverage & Sales and Debora Snyder, CPA were honored for their service and leading the community campaign by exceeding the goal of $1.62 million. In addition, Linda McAnany, retired President/CPO(2001-2010) was honored for her years of service to the United Way.
In addition, several individuals and businesses were recognized for their service to the United Way. Debbie Hamler, Special Learning Center, was presented with the Ruth C. Meloy Award for Distinguished Service. That award recognizes a staff member of a United Way agency whose work and dedication exemplifies the mission of the United Way of Central Missouri. “During those 26 years, she has consistently demonstrated her love for the children who attend the Special Learning Center and the parents of those children. She works tirelessly to educate the public as to the services the Special Learning Center provides for the community, and to raise money to build a facility that will house the many children in our community with special needs. Much like how the United Way manages it finances and utilizes every dollar, she manages the Special Learning Center in a manner that maximizes the benefit from every dollar paid in fees or generated through donations and grants. She “encourages” supporters of the Special Learning Center to donate time, money, and in-kind services to the school and then oversees each dollar spent to ensure that funds are spent wisely”, said a volunteer from Special Learning Center.
Mark Dumus, volunteer for The Food Bank for Central and Northeast MO, received the Volunteer of the Year Award. “He has been a driving force in helping The Food Bank reach more hungry people in Cole County. Because of this person, First United Methodist Church became an agency of The Food Bank in 2004 and started our first summer feeding program in the county called Food 4 Kids. When we started the Buddy Pack program in 2005 at East School, our Volunteer of the Year was involved in helping grow the program by recruiting the volunteers to pack the back packs every week and deliver the packs to the school. The Food Bank now partners with 12 schools in Jefferson City, and Cole County became one of our first “Buddy Banks” where volunteers pack buddy packs for a regional area that includes a total of 25 schools in Cole, Miller Moniteau, Morgan and Osage counties. Because of this coordinated effort, nearly 2,000 children per week are getting nutritious food. And if that’s not enough this individual has spearheaded volunteer efforts for the past two years with the Jefferson City Letter Carrier food drive.” Martin Luther King once said “Let people say that I tried to feed the hungry”. Our 2010 Volunteer of the Year, Mark Dumas, feeds the hungry every day with a gentle spirit and a compassionate heart,” said Peggy Kirkpatrick, Executive Director of The Food Bank.
Three central Missouri businesses received honors for their outstanding efforts during the Community Campaign. The Outstanding Pacesetter award was presented to Capital Region Medical Center. The William W. Quigg Awards were presented to Modine Manufacturing and Mid America Bank. These awards were named after an individual who was not only a strong supporter of the United Way of Central Missouri but also the entire business community.

The United Way also recognized Missouri State employees for an outstanding Missouri State Charitable Campaign. In addition, five local companies were recognized for their workplace employee campaigns. This year, the top five workplace employee campaigns were: first place, Central Bank & Central Technology Services, second place, Ameren Missouri, third place, Scholastic Inc., fourth place, Jefferson City Public Schools, and fifth place was Jefferson Bank /Central Mortgage Company.
The United Way of Central Missouri Annual Meeting was sponsored by KOMU-TV8. Prior to announcing the campaign results, organizers stressed that the total amount raised contains projections as donations continue to arrive at the United Way office over the coming weeks and months.
The projected pledge total of the 2010 Community campaign is $1,626,254. United Way leadership reported this total will make it possible to meet its financial commitment to the member agencies and the community. “Our first responsibility is to our 25 partner agencies, many of which could not exist without United Way funding”, said United Way President, Ann Bax. “This year’s projected total will allow us to keep that commitment and help make a positive difference in the lives of people in need in our community.”
“Challenging times call for big hearts. It's no surprise that Mid-Missourians have answered the call to help their friends and neighbors” said Debbie Snyder, 2010 Campaign Co-Chair. “That generous spirit makes "Live United" more than just a slogan. In our community, it's a way of life.”
“Once again, this confirms what a generous community we live in,” added Bernie Fechtel, Campaign Co-Chair. “It also shows the community believes in and trusts the United Way when it comes to determining and meeting the needs in Central Missouri.” He added, “We are so fortunate to be able to count on our contributors year after year”.
Money raised during the Community Campaign funds the work of the 25 member agencies and programs. United Way of Central Missouri serves Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage, and southern Callaway Counties. The Victory Celebration is scheduled Wednesday, November 10th at 8:00am at Missouri Farm Bureau, 701 S. Country Club Drive. The event is free and open to the public. A light breakfast will be provided.
“The campaign results announced at the Victory Celebration is a projection, as actual results for the 2010 Community Campaign will not be finalized until early next year. Learning happens everywhere a child goes, but parents, grandparents and caregivers may not always know how to support that learning.

When parents, grandparents and caregivers take their children to the Born Learning Trail at Memorial Park, they’ll be able to play fun games together that will help the child come to school ready to succeed. That’s because United Way of Central Missouri and Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation created an outdoor interactive early learning Trail at Memorial Park to help families turn excursions into fun learning moments.

The Born Learning Trail is a series of learning activities that any adult can play with young children. Based on the latest early childhood research and approved by national early learning experts through United Way Worldwide, the Born Learning Trail is designed to help adults interact with children to boost language and literacy development and to help caregivers understand how to best support early learning in outdoor everyday moments. There are 10 signs on the Born Learning Trail, each including activities such as Hopscotch and identifying shapes and letters. Watch! Stop! Learn! Play! Encourages the caregiver to follow the child’s lead, building the child’s curiosity and confidence.

“The Born Learning Trail promotes fun and games – important components of early childhood learning,” said Theresa Verslues, Vice-President of United Way of Central Missouri. “Research tells us children are literally ‘born learning.’ That means five years of education take place before they ever enter kindergarten. We know that what happens in a child’s early years matters – for success in life and for school readiness. And we want to help parents, grandparents, and caregivers use everyday outings…including trips to Memorial Park – to support that learning.”

United Way of Central Missouri established an Early Childhood Advisory Committee and identified three focus areas. To support and promote early childhood programs and initiatives in the Central Missouri area, provide Born Learning materials to low-income families as an introduction to early learning, and identify gaps in services/needs in early childhood in our community.

For more information on Born Learning resources go to www.bornlearning.org or contact the United Way office at (573) 636-4100.
(###)

United Way of Central Missouri Early Childhood Advisory Committee Joins National Celebration of Week of the Young Child

The United Way of Central Missouri Early Childhood Advisory Committee and the Lincoln University- Assn. for the Education of Young Children, along with hundreds of local organizations around the country, will celebrate Week of the Young Child, April 11-17, 2010. Prior to announcing the campaign results, organizers stressed that the total amount raised contains projections as donations continue to arrive at the United Way office over the coming weeks and months.

The projected pledge total of the 2009-2010 Community Campaign is $1,600,006. United Way leadership reported this total will make it possible to meet its financial commitment to the member agencies and the community. "Our first responsibility is to our partner agencies many of which could not exist without United Way funding", said United Way President, Linda McAnany. "This year's projected total will allow us to keep that commitment and have additional dollars available for one-time grants."

"Challenging times call for big hearts. It's no surprise that Mid-Missourians have answered the call to help their friends and neighbors" said Warren Krech, 2009 Campaign Co-Chair. "That generous spirit makes "Live United" more than just a slogan. In Central Missouri, it's a way of life."

"Once again, this confirms what a generous community we live in", added Mike Kehoe, 2009 Campaign Co-Chair. "It also shows the community believes in and trusts the United Way when it comes to determining and meeting the needs in Central Missouri". He added, "We consider ourselves very lucky to be able to count on our contributors year after year".

Money raised during the Community Campaign funds the work of the 25 member agencies and programs. The carnival-like event is scheduled for Thursday, September 24 from 5pm till 7pm at the Jefferson City's Memorial Park.
Kick-off for Kids is a free event for children whose families are served by the United Way partner agencies. Organizers say this event is planned with the children's health, safety, and enjoyment in mind. "Both the organizers and the kids have fun at this event," says Lori Massman, Community Development Manager for Scholastic. "Because it is all about kids, this event fits well with what we do at Scholastic."
Several United Way agencies will provide games. A bounce house, kid friendly games and puzzles, along with a fire truck from the Jefferson City Fire Department will be some of the activities. Volunteers from the Runge Nature Center will also have a display.
For more information about Kick-off for Kids, please contact the United Way office at 573-636-4100. More than 300 supporters attended the campaign kickoff luncheon which was held on September 3rd. The event marks the beginning of an eight-week long effort to raise this year's goal of $1,600,000.

Twenty-six local businesses and the United Way agencies have already completed their part of the fundraising during this summer's Pacesetter Campaign. The group held their employee campaigns in late July and August. This year's Pacesetters raised $593,269 which is 37% of the 2009 campaign goal.

While Campaign Co-Chairs Warren Krech and Mike Kehoe were satisfied with the preliminary numbers, they noted that there is still a lot of work to do. "To have 37% of the campaign goal pledged is encouraging," says Krech. "But we still have a long way to go." Kehoe added, "We know that a lot of people in central Missouri are hurting right now, but we also know the central Missouri community will step forward and help us meet the needs of the partner agencies."

Linda McAnany, President of the United Way of Central Missouri, says she is also encouraged with the preliminary numbers. "We knew this campaign would require a lot of extra effort. Our Pacesetter group worked very hard. The results show it. The goal for the 2009-2010 Community Campaign was announced during a news conference this morning.
Campaign Co-Chairs Warren Krech and Mike Kehoe acknowledged the 84-year history of the United Way in the Jefferson City community. “The United Way has encouraged agencies and individuals alike to unite in the effort to improve lives and build a stronger community”, said Kehoe. “The goal of $1.6 million is a result of the ever growing needs in the community. A number of families in our community have lost income due to layoffs.”
“These are interesting times”, added Krech. “Many of the folks who gave to the UW campaign last year are looking for help from the agencies this year.” Both Kehoe and Krech hope that those who have supported the campaign in the past will give just a little extra this year and that there will be a few new donors step forward this year.
Krech, Kehoe and the United Way staff will enlist the help of numerous volunteers to help spread the word about this year’s campaign. The 25-plus member Campaign Leadership Team will help to solicit donations and pledges from businesses and individuals throughout the service area.
The 2009-2010 Community Campaign officially begins at 11:30 AM on September 3rd with a kickoff luncheon at the Capital Plaza Hotel. Twenty-five area businesses and the United Way partner agencies will jumpstart the fundraising during the Pacesetter Campaign, which will be held throughout the month of August.
The United Way of Central Missouri’s community campaign is held annually to help fund the work of its 25 member agencies and programs. We’re grateful that our main funder, Missouri Foundation for Health, understood its importance as well. It can be overwhelming not knowing where to turn for help. The staff, who man the phones 24 hours a day, are trained at referring callers to the organizations that can assist with their needs.”

“With more than 10,000 health and human service organizations and government programs throughout Missouri, it’s hard to know where to turn,” said McAnany. “By dialing 2-1-1, our call specialists are there to help you through the maze.”

Number and type of calls
Most of the calls made to 2-1-1, are from people looking for help with basic needs such as utility, rent and food assistance. Prior to announcing the campaign results, organizers stressed that the total amount raised contains projections as donations continue to arrive at the United Way office over the coming weeks and months.
The projected pledge total of the 2008-2009 Community campaign is $1,510,511 which is about 5% less than this year’s goal. “As many charities have reported, this is a tough year for fundraising,” said Linda McAnany, UWCMO President. “The early distractions were gas prices and the elections.” She continued, “How little did we know that there would be lay-offs locally and the stock market would take a dramatic dive.”
United Way leadership reported this total will make it possible to meet its commitments to the member agencies and the community. “We are relieved that this year’s projected total will allow us to keep the promises made to the agencies last spring when the funding requests were approved”, said Lori Hoelscher, Campaign Co-Chair.
“Once again, this confirms what a generous community we live in,” said Greg Gaffke, Campaign Co-Chair. “It also shows the community believes in and trusts the United Way when it comes to determining and meeting the needs in Central Missouri.”
“There are never enough ways to thank the community for the support it provides the United Way and its partner agencies,” says McAnany. “We consider ourselves very lucky to be able to count on our contributors year after year”.
Money raised during the Community Campaign funds the work of the 25 member agencies and programs. United Way of Central Missouri serves Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage, and southern Callaway Counties. More than 320 supporters were on hand for the campaign kickoff luncheon at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. The event marks the beginning of an eight-week long effort to raise this year’s goal of $1,600,000.
Twenty-seven local businesses and the United Way agencies have already completed their part of the fundraising, during this summer’s Pacesetter Campaign. The group held their employee campaigns in late July and August. This year’s Pacesetters raised $661,861 which is 41% of the 2008 campaign goal.
Campaign Co-Chairs Lori Hoelscher and Greg Gaffke were satisfied with the preliminary numbers. “To have a little over 41% of the campaign goal pledged is encouraging,” says Hoelscher. “But we still have a long way to go.” Gaffke added, “We expect good results from the Pacesetter companies because they have a history of strong support and leadership in the United Way.”
Linda McAnany, President of the United Way of Central Missouri says she is pleased with the preliminary numbers. “Each year, we ask the Pacesetter group to lead the campaign. In reviewing the pacesetter results for the last few years, any time those numbers were close to 42%, we made the overall campaign goal. It will be close, but we think we are on target for the balance of our campaign.”
Money donated during the campaign will be used to fund the United Way of Central Missouri’s 25 health and human service agencies and programs. Last year, more than 88,000 people in Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage, and southern Callaway Counties received help from one or more United Way agencies.
For more information about the United Way of Central Missouri 2007-2008 Community Campaign, call 573-636-4100 or logon to http://www.unitedwaycemo.org/.

United Way of Central Missouri 2008 Pacesetters

In announcing the results of the 2008 Pacesetter campaign, the United Way of Central Missouri recognized the efforts of twenty-seven area businesses and the United Way partner agencies. Residents received a dozen roses
absolutely free when they stopped by River City Florist at 212 Madison Street in downtown Jefferson City. River City Florist distributed 15,000 roses in bunches of a dozen, absolutely free to anyone who visited their shop, as a sign of friendship & goodwill. Established in 1994, FTD Good Neighbor Day has become an event dedicated to helping create a friendlier, more caring & compassionate world with roses.

Visitors in River City Florist had to promise that in return for the free roses, they would keep only one for themselves and would give away the others to 11 different people. The success of Good Neighbor Day was overwhelmingly positive as the people of Jefferson City came out to participate and show their community spirit & support, states owner, Mike Moscato.

This year Good neighbor Day is Wednesday September 3rd, beginning at 10:00 a.m., River City Florist at 212 Madison Street will give away 10,000 roses in bunches of a dozen, absolutely free to anyone who visits the shop. “Our desire is to create a friendlier, more caring world, starting right here in Jefferson City.” In years past, we have had numerous requests for a second dozen roses. To accommodate those requests, we will be asking for a donation of $10.00 or more, with 100% of those proceeds going to the local United Way Campaign!

Local volunteers, many of them who have participated for several years, have graciously given up their time to help pass out the roses. Some of the volunteers this year include First Lady Melanie Blunt, Jefferson City Mayor John Landwehr, Rev. Gene Rooney, Representatives from the Jefferson City Police Department, Linda McAnany from the local United Way, KRCG-TV’s Monica Madeja & many more! As in years past, refreshments will be served throughout most of the day. Central Bank will be popping popcorn.

Good Neighbor Day, in its thirteenth year, has become a tradition in the Jefferson City area as a day of goodwill to all people. Joining the effort at River City Florist are local sponsors, Central Bank, KRCG-TV, Mid America Wireless. Jefferson City New Tribune, Central Travel, Mike Kehoe Ford, Fechtel Beverages & Coca Cola. All have pitched in to help make Good Neighbor Day 2008 a truly “neighborly” celebration.

United Way Plans Annual Campaign Kickoff

Tickets are on sale for the United Way of Central Missouri’s 2008-2009 Community Campaign Kickoff.
